Troubleshooting
Below is a list of some common problems you may run into.
- VMware Player is not installed. Internet Cleanroom™ Personal Edition Browser Beta 1.0 runs on VMware Player 2.0 or later. You need to download, install and run this to accept VMware’s EULA to run Internet Cleanroom. Please see http://www.vmware.com/download/player/ to download VMware Player 2.0 or later.
- Firewall is blocking our software. If you are running Windows firewall or a commercial personal firewall, it is likely when you first start Internet Cleanroom that the firewall will block our communications. You will need to ALLOW these communications always to run our software.
- VM is stuck in ‘restoring’ state. Chances are the virtual machine may have terminated in a bad state so that the next time you launch the browser the VM has a hard time restoring itself. If we detect this condition, we will terminate the VM Player process gracefully then re-start it. If we do not detect this, you can launch the browser again. After 60 seconds, it will auto-terminate if it is unable to communicate to the virtual machine and gracefully terminate the VM. The next time you launch the browser, it should start in the correct condition.
- Firefox™ updates itself. Periodically, when Mozilla™ updates Firefox™, the Firefox browser will notify you that an update is available. However, even if you download the update, on the next browser re-start or restoral, the browser machine will revert to its pristine state, which will not include the latest update. No worries, however, because even if the Firefox browser is compromised during your session, the compromise cannot reach your host machine and it will be eliminated during the next restoral or re-start. We will periodically update the browser with future releases and upgrades of Internet Cleanroom™ Personal Edition Browser.
- Errors. If Internet Cleanroom exits with an error, an error log file is created. A program, ICSupport.exe will run and ask permission to mail the error and log file to Secure Command. If you agree, the bug will be sent to Secure Command and will be assigned a bug tracking number. We will use this data to improve the product.
- Error: Failed to change VMnet 8. If you are using Vista, please run adminVista.exe manually., error code:153 If you upgrade VMPlayer, the network settings on VMPlayer will need to be reset. If you are running on WindowsXP, we will tell you this and change it for you automatically by clicking the OK in the dialog box. If you are running Windows Vista, you will need to login as Admin and then go to the directory: C:/Program Files/Secure Command/ICPersonal/ and run the program AdminVista.exe. This will configure the network settings correctly so IC Personal Edition Browser will run correctly.
- Error: Cannot receive message from the guest OS. If your computer is particularly busy, has limited memory, and lots of applications running, it may take VMPlayer(R) awhile to load the guest operating system and the browser. In some cases, we time out before the guest OS is running and exit with this error message. Try again by either closing applications to free up memory, or waiting after lots of applications or services have completed their tasks, after boot-up, for example.
- Warning: Server Certificate Not Yet Valid. On web sites that present an SSL site certificate, you will frequently get a warning that the site certificate will not be valid until a certain date (that has already passed). What's happening here is that the virtual machine image is frozen in time (from December 2007) and the site certificate is ahead of the VM time. This is a known bug that will be corrected in V2 of Internet Cleanroom Personal Edition Browser. For now you can ignore the warning.
- Error: Warning: failed to put the process into job., error code:161. If you are running Windows Vista and receive this error, it is possible your User Account Control (UAC) is turned off. Go to Control Panel, User accounts, then Turn On User Account Control. You will need to re-boot the system for this to take place. Re-start Internet Cleanroom and the error message should not appear.
